The 2023 DFFL Awards

Here are the results of the annual DFFL News Award Winners for 2023.

Most Valuable PlayerJosh Allen (The Jerk Meister) The 10th overall selection wins his first DFFL MVP award by putting up 155 fantasy points from 3541 passing yards and 26 TD passes, as well as 11 rushing TD’s in 13 fantasy starts, and won the award going away despite his 14 interceptions and 3 lost fumbles. Allen had two weeks with 23 fantasy points, 9 weeks with at least 10 points and even had a week with (-1) point -  totaling  29.9% of the Jerk’s total offensive output.

For the second straight season the runner up is Caged Orange QB Jalen Hurts.  The team’s keeper pick for 2023 only threw for 3335 yards  and 19 TD’s, but  added another 542 rushing yards and 14 TD’s for a total for 142 fantasy points,.  Mermaid Barbies RB Christian McCaffrey finished third with 124 points

Least Valuable Player – Tough to single out anyone this year, since most of the underperforming players didn’t stay in the starting lineup for long, but of the players who made at least 7 fantasy starts and accumulated at least 1 point ‘merica’s Team takes the prize thanks to TE Donald Parham.  Acquired prior to week 6 Parham produced the following numbers over his 9 starts: 27 targets, 16 catches, 169 yards and 1 TD, with his 4 catch 57 yard performance in week 11 being his high bar for the season,

Also receiving LVP votes were Jerk Meister RB Justice Hill with his 5 fantasy points in 7 starts. Cheeseheads from Hell RB Jahmyr Gibbs with 8 points in 7 starts and Cosa Nostra/Gamblers WR Adam Thielen (9 points over 8 starts)

Rookie of the Year Sam LaPorta (Gamblers) Not a lot went right for the Gamblers this year, but picking up LaPorta prior to week two was one of the few moves that worked out for the team –87 targets 61 catches, 663 yards, 6 TD’s   Runner up was Mean Machine WR Puka Nacua with 38 fantasy points in 9 starts after being acquired after week #1   Placekickers are exempt from this award – nullifying both Brandon Aubrey and Jake Moody

Late Round Steal – Not a lot to choose from this year, but the best pick of the late rounds was probably Cheeseheads from Hell WR Zay Flowers – selected 163rd overall Flowers was an infrequent starter for the Cheeseheads during their long losing streak but in totality had 64 catches, 673 yards and 4 total touchdowns

First Round Draft Bricks – Outside of a couple of significant injuries, the majority of the first round picks seem to hold their value

Sentimental Value Award The Chuck Evans Award is given annually to the player(s) who were drafted by a DFFL team, spend the entire year on the roster, but never make it into the starting lineup.

I’m still working on this one, since there isn’t a way to figure this one out without going through and scanning everyone’s rosters top to bottom. In the end no one wins this award outright – the closest I could find that met the Sentimental Value Criteria was the Mandalorians, who drafted and held on to Raiders TE Michael Mayer for 12 weeks before finally dropping him

Blindfold Award – This award is given to the player who makes the most of their single fantasy start.  This years award will be shared by Dak Prescott (The Jerk Meister) and Anthony Richardson (Gamblers)  each of whom put up 15 fantasy points in the only starts of the season

Todd Collins Award – This award was created in 2010 to honor the player who has the worst performance in their single start.  This year sees no winner as no one produced negative fantasy points in their lone start.   For the first time since this award was created beginning in 2010 we have no winner.  Of the 191 players who accumulated at least 1 fantasy point while as a starter no one did worse than putting up a zero.

Award for the Most Awards Award - This award is given annually to the teams who appear most often in the "Bogus Move of the Week" column.

While last season saw the fewest number of BMOTW mentions in recent memory, this season was even worse as there were only 20 occasions the entire year where someone made a move that qualified.

After the official tabulation of the vote, the Mermaid Barbies are the winner of the AFTMA award for 2023 with 3 nominations. F T C, Cheeseheads from Hell, Mandalorians, Gamblers, Mean Machines, ‘merica’s Team and The Jerk Meister each received two mentions, Caged Orange, Cosa Nostra and the Heienkins each check in with one apiece – meaning that Sacks in the City of all teams was the only one not to receive a Bogus Move this year
